About SQL IN Clause Formatter & Generator
Paste IDs, emails or codes copied from a spreadsheet or log and get a ready-to-use WHERE column IN (…) clause. Numbers stay unquoted, strings are single-quoted with apostrophes escaped, duplicates can be removed, and long lists are split into OR-ed batches for databases like Oracle that limit IN lists to 1,000 items.
How to use SQL IN Clause Formatter & Generator
- Paste your values, one per line or separated by commas.
- Enter the column name and choose how values should be quoted.
- Copy the generated IN clause into your WHERE statement.
Key features
- Automatic quoting: numbers unquoted, text in single quotes
- Escapes apostrophes (O'Brien → 'O''Brien')
- Optional duplicate removal
- Splits long lists into OR-ed batches (default 1,000 per IN list)
- Runs entirely in your browser
Frequently asked questions
- How are strings quoted and escaped?
- Values are wrapped in single quotes and any apostrophe inside a value is doubled, which is the standard SQL escape.
- Why split into batches?
- Oracle rejects IN lists with more than 1,000 expressions (ORA-01795), and very long lists can hurt other databases. Batches are combined with OR so the query returns the same rows.
- Can I paste a column from Excel?
- Yes. Values separated by new lines, commas, semicolons or tabs are all recognised, and surrounding quotes are removed.
- Should I use IN lists for user input in applications?
- In application code, use parameterized queries instead of building SQL strings, to prevent SQL injection. This tool is meant for ad-hoc queries.
- Is my data private?
- Yes. Everything runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded.
