Frequently asked questions
- How is CD interest calculated?
- Maturity value = deposit × (1 + rate ÷ n)^(n × years), where n is the number of compounding periods per year.
- What is the difference between APR and APY?
- APR is the stated annual rate. APY includes the effect of compounding within the year, so it is slightly higher whenever interest compounds more than once a year.
- My bank quotes APY — what should I enter?
- This calculator expects the APR. If you only know the APY, choose annual compounding and enter the APY as the rate.
- Are early withdrawal penalties included?
- No. Withdrawing before maturity usually costs several months of interest.
- Is my data private?
- Yes. Everything is calculated locally in your browser.
